None of us can keep up a pace of 200 miles per hour day after day, month after month, year after year. The key is to keep your attitude positive, your focus on what is working, and your activity levels high regardless of the results.

In my best selling book, Soft Sell, I share the idea that there are a variety of sales slumps. In this short tip, I will only discuss four. They are:

1. An attitude slump.

2. A prospecting slump.

3. A presentation slump.

4. A closing slump.

An attitude slump is where you find it difficult to maintain your confidence, poise, commitment, dedication, persistence and motivation. This can be due to a number of causes. Some of them are: a) you have lost belief in your organization?s products or services. b) you are not reaching your goals or objectives according to your schedule c) You are under a great deal of stress due to deadlines, expectations or loss of control of the sales process, and d) you have other issues in your life that are impacting your attitudes.

A prospecting slump is where you lack adequate qualified leads and are spending a great deal of time calling on poor prospects.

The average citizen speaks of his mechanic in terms usually reserved for politicians and perverts. This response is both unfair and inaccurate. It is definitely emotional.

There is a reason for this. Joe Citizen’s reaction to his mechanic is not simply bad judgment or perversity. People react to events in direct proportion to their affect on survival. How important is a car to your survival? In Los Angeles, it is as important as food. How well the car works absolutely affects quality of life. There’s a lot of emotion associated with survival.

These attitudes are not entirely unwarranted. Remember how you felt when you bought your first new car? There was excitement, the pleasure of having done an adult thing, made and saved enough money to make one of the largest purchases an American can make. And the satisfaction of owning a new car: “New”! This is very special indeed.

However, even if you are not dancing five hours a day in hopes of becoming a professional ballerina or ballroom medal winner, the right equipment will optimize your enjoyment by keeping you comfortable and safe.

The style of clothing you wear will depend upon the type of dance and the venue. In choosing clothing, you should give consideration to your own comfort and safety as well as that of your partner. Lightweight cotton, such as Egyptian cotton or cotton lawn, is one of the coolest fabrics. This makes a good choice for shirts and tops. T-shirts are usually heavyweight cotton and will get extremely hot after a few minutes of dancing. They also hold the moisture close to your body leading to a hot, sticky uncomfortable mess.

An alternative to the t-shirt if you want to go casual is workout wear that wicks moisture away from the body.
